๐ Understanding Test Scores
How Test Scores Work
A test score is calculated by dividing the number of correct answers by the total number of questions, then multiplying by 100. For example, getting 22 out of 25 questions correct yields a score of 88%.
Letter Grade Conversion
Letter grades are assigned based on percentage ranges. While scales vary by institution, the most common scale uses A (90โ100%), B (80โ89%), C (70โ79%), D (60โ69%), and F (below 60%).
Weighted vs Unweighted
This calculator assumes each question has equal weight. For tests where questions have different point values, use our Grade Calculator which supports weighted scoring.
Test Score Formulas
The test score percentage is calculated using a simple formula:
Score % = (Number of Correct Answers รท Total Number of Questions) ร 100
Number of Correct Answers = Total Questions โ Number of Wrong Answers
Example: 25-Question Test with 3 Wrong
If a test has 25 questions and you answered 3 incorrectly:
Correct Answers = 25 โ 3 = 22
Score % = (22 รท 25) ร 100 = 88.00%
Letter Grade = B+
You scored 88% on the test, which corresponds to a B+ letter grade on the standard grading scale.
Tips for Improving Test Scores
- Review regularly: Consistent review of material is more effective than last-minute cramming.
- Practice with past tests: Familiarize yourself with the question format and timing.
- Focus on weak areas: Use test results to identify areas that need more attention.
- Read questions carefully: Many mistakes come from misreading questions rather than not knowing the material.
- Manage your time: Allocate time per question and don't spend too long on difficult ones โ come back to them later.
