Wind Chill Calculator
Calculate the perceived temperature based on wind speed and air temperature
Wind Chill Calculator
This calculator estimates the temperature felt by the body as a result of wind speed and actual air temperature. The calculator works for air temperatures between -50°F and 50°F.

⚠️ Safety Notice
At these conditions, frostbite is unlikely for most people. Dress appropriately for cold weather.
📚 Understanding Wind Chill
What is Wind Chill?
In winter, the temperature felt by the body is typically lower than the actual air temperature. This is similar to the body feeling a higher temperature under high humidity conditions in the summer.
How It Works
Wind chill is mostly a result of convection. As air moves around the body, it disrupts warm air, allowing cooler air to replace it, increasing the rate of heat loss.
Safety Importance
Understanding wind chill helps prevent frostbite and hypothermia by providing accurate perceived temperature readings for proper clothing and exposure decisions.
How to Calculate Wind Chill
The perception of lower temperatures caused by wind led to the development of many different formulas that attempt to qualitatively predict the effect of wind on this perceived temperature. This calculator uses the formula developed by the National Weather Service in the United States:
Wind Chill Temperature = 35.74 + 0.6215×T - 35.75×V0.16 + 0.4275×T×V0.16
where T is the actual air temperature in Fahrenheit, V is the wind speed in mph.
Cold Weather Safety Guidelines
32 to 15°F (0 to -10°C):
Dress warmly, with the outside temperature in mind.
15 to -15°F (-10 to -25°C):
Risk of hypothermia with prolonged exposure. Dress in layers - wicking base layer, insulating middle layer, wind-resistant outer layer. Wear hat, mittens, and scarf.
-15 to -50°F (-25 to -45°C):
Risk of frostbite on exposed skin. Cover all exposed skin, particularly face and hands. Add extra insulating layers.
Below -50°F (-45°C):
Extreme danger. Exposed skin may freeze in minutes. Limit outdoor activities or cancel them entirely.
