📚 About Gravel
Gravel is a loose mixture of rock fragments formed as a result of erosion. Gravel, along with other types of rock fragments such as sand and crushed stone, is commonly used for construction purposes, though it has other uses as well.
Rock fragments are typically classified based on the size of the individual pieces that make up the aggregate. For example, sand is made up of rock fragments smaller than those in gravel, while gravel is smaller than cobbles, and cobbles are smaller than boulders. Size classifications of rock fragments (and gravel) can vary. Two commonly used standards are the Udden-Wentworth scale and ISO 14688.
How much gravel do I need?
The amount of gravel required depends on area and depth. Multiply the area by the desired depth to get volume, then use density to estimate weight. The calculator handles these automatically.
What is gravel used for?
Gravel is widely used in construction (as concrete aggregate, road base, asphalt mix), drainage, landscaping, and as a durable alternative to organic mulch.
Types of gravel
- Bank gravel: Mixed sizes with sand and clay; good drainage and fill.
- River stone: Smooth, decorative stones used in landscaping and water features.
- Pea gravel: Small, inexpensive; used for pathways, driveways, concrete aggregate.
- Crushed stone: Mechanically crushed; common as concrete aggregate and road base.
- Pay gravel: Contains precious metals; primarily for panning, not construction.
